Onsen towns you can reach by train from Osaka & Kyoto, in order of the travel time given in official access guides. For each town we list ryokan with an in-room open-air bath or a reservable private bath, with sources and spring data where we have it.

• Travel times are the values given in access guides from each onsen town’s tourism association or local government, or from the railway company (checked 2026-10-03). For routes with more than one leg, the time is the sum of the legs and does not include waiting for connections. Timetables change, so check before you travel.
• Private bath and tattoo information comes from each property's official website or other published information. Every item links to its source and shows the date we last checked it. Items we could not source are left out.
• Spring type, pH and how the water is used come from the onsen analysis report that Japanese law requires each facility to post, and from the facility's water-usage notice. They are shown only for stays whose report we have on file.
