Overview
The discovery of Yunogo Onsen is attributed to the high-ranking Buddhist monk Ennin during the Heian period. Legend has it that he found a white heron healing its injured leg in the water, leading him to uncover the hot spring. This story earned it the nickname "Sagi no Yu" (Heron's Spring).
During the Edo period, it was developed as a spa town by Mori Tadamasa, the lord of the Tsuyama Domain, and flourished as the personal bathhouse for generations of feudal lords. Today, it retains its historic charm with numerous ryokans and day-use spa facilities. It is celebrated as one of the "Mimasaka Santo" (Three Springs of Mimasaka), alongside Yubara and Okutsu Onsens.
Typical Spring Quality and Indications
The main spring quality is a sodium/calcium-chloride spring, which is colorless, odorless, and gentle on the skin. The salt content coats the skin, preventing moisture from evaporating, which provides excellent moisturizing and heat-retention effects. This is why it is renowned as a "Spring of Beauty."

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is a pleasant 40-43°C (104-109°F), and many facilities offer free-flowing spring water directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi). The water feels soft, leaving your skin feeling moist and smooth after bathing. While enjoyable year-round, the spring season with its beautiful cherry blossoms and autumn with its vibrant foliage are particularly recommended for enjoying the onsen along with the surrounding natural scenery.
