Overview
Yubara Onsen has a long history, with records showing that the 16th-century warlord Ukita Hideie visited for his mother's hot spring therapy. It flourished as a therapeutic spa town during the Edo period, and the townscape still retains much of its traditional charm. The hot spring source bubbles up from the bed of the Asahi River, and its abundant waters feed the famous open-air bath, 'Sunayu.'
Sunayu, located directly below the Yubara Dam, is a renowned bath once ranked as the 'Yokozuna (Grand Champion) of the West' in a national open-air bath ranking. Its name comes from the hot water bubbling up through the sand (suna) of the riverbed. Open 24 hours a day and free to use, it offers a rustic and immersive natural experience. The area is also known as a habitat for the Japanese Giant Salamander, a special national natural monument.
Typical Spring Quality and Indications
The water at Yubara Onsen is an alkaline simple thermal spring, which is gentle on the skin. With a high pH level, it leaves the skin feeling smooth, earning it the nickname 'bijin-no-yu' (waters of beauty). The water is clear, colorless, and mild, making it suitable for everyone to enjoy.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is a pleasant 40-44°C (104-111°F), and many facilities offer 'gensen kakenagashi' baths, where the water flows directly from the source without added water or heating. The appeal lies in its abundant volume, allowing you to soak in constantly fresh water. While enjoyable year-round, the scenery from the open-air baths is especially stunning in spring with fresh greenery and in autumn with vibrant foliage. Bathing amid a snowy landscape in winter is also a uniquely charming experience. In summer, the 'Hanzaki Festival,' celebrating the giant salamander, is held.
