Overview
Hachimantai Onsen-go is a collective term for the hot spring areas located within Towada-Hachimantai National Park, which spans Iwate and Akita prefectures. At the foot of Mt. Hachimantai, which has an altitude of about 1,600 meters, you'll find a wide variety of onsen, from historic therapeutic bathhouses like Goshogake, Fukenoyu, and Toshichi Onsen to modern resort hotels.
Many of these have a long history, used as 'toji' (therapeutic bathing) sites since the Edo period. Blessed by volcanic activity, the area boasts abundant hot water and diverse spring qualities. The greatest appeal is enjoying a bath while taking in the changing seasons amidst beautiful landscapes of primeval beech forests and alpine plants. Some facilities offer unique bathing experiences, such as 'ondol' (underfloor heating) using geothermal steam and 'doroyu' (mud baths) in natural mud.
Typical Spring Qualities and Indications
The hot springs in Hachimantai Onsen-go are diverse, but the most representative is the Sulfur Spring. It's characterized by a distinct smell like rotten eggs and turns milky white when exposed to air. It is said to be excellent for promoting blood circulation and detoxification. You can also enjoy other types of springs, such as Simple Thermal Onsen and Acidic Springs, depending on the location.
- Atopic dermatitis
- Chronic eczema
- Psoriasis vulgaris
- Impaired glucose tolerance (Diabetes)
- Hypercholesterolemia
Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
Many facilities feature 'gensen kakenagashi' (water flowing directly from the source) and boast a plentiful supply of hot water. The water colors vary from milky white to emerald green, offering a visual treat. Due to its high altitude, summer is cool and ideal for escaping the heat. The area offers different charms throughout the year: driving along the Hachimantai Aspite Line's 'corridor of snow' in spring, enjoying the fiery autumn foliage, and relaxing in an open-air bath surrounded by deep snow in winter.
