Overview
Osawa Onsen has a long history, with legends stating it was discovered around 1,200 years ago by the general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. During the Edo period, it served as a therapeutic spa for the lords of the Nanbu clan, and has been healing the minds and bodies of visitors ever since.
The area is also famous as a place frequently visited by the poet and children's story author Kenji Miyazawa, who is said to have developed ideas for many of his works while relaxing here. The sculptor and poet Kotaro Takamura also spent his later years in this area. The resort features three distinct accommodations: the modern hotel 'Sansuikaku,' the traditional thatched-roof inn 'Kikusuikan,' and the 'Jisui-bu/Tojiya,' which preserves the old-style self-catering spa culture, allowing guests to choose a style that suits them.
Its greatest attraction is the 'Osawa-no-yu,' a mixed-gender open-air bath facing the Hozawa River. This spacious bath, where you can soak while listening to the murmuring stream and enjoying the seasonal beauty of the valley, is the symbol of Osawa Onsen.
Key Spring Qualities and Health Benefits
The water at Osawa Onsen is an alkaline simple hot spring, which is gentle on the skin. With a high pH level, it is known as a 'bijin-no-yu' (beauty spring) for its skin-smoothing properties. The clear, colorless, and mild water is perfect for long soaks, making it ideal for refreshing both mind and body.

Water Characteristics and Best Seasons to Visit
The water from multiple sources is supplied as 'gensen kakenagashi,' meaning it is 100% pure, free-flowing spring water without any added water, heating, or circulation. The water temperature is naturally pleasant, allowing you to fully enjoy the fresh onsen water. You can also enjoy 'yu-meguri' (bath hopping) among the various indoor and outdoor baths, each with its own unique charm.
Thanks to its riverside location, you can enjoy beautiful natural scenery throughout the year. The fresh green foliage of spring (May-June), the vibrant colors of autumn (mid-October to early November), and the tranquil snowscapes of winter are particularly breathtaking.
