Overview
Ebino Kogen Onsen is situated in the heart of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park in southern Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture. At an elevation of about 1,200 meters, it serves as a bustling hub for hikers and tourists heading to the Kirishima mountain range, including Mt. Karakunidake, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains.
Its history is deeply connected to the volcanic activity of the Kirishima mountains, and it has long been used as a therapeutic hot spring retreat (toji). Characterized by its abundant, naturally flowing hot water, bathing in the crisp mountain air is an exceptional experience. The scent of sulfur wafting through the area provides a deep sense of healing to visitors.
The seasonal scenery is another major draw. You can enjoy the ever-changing face of nature throughout the year: fields of Miyama Kirishima azaleas in spring, a cool refuge in summer, fiery autumn foliage, and magical frosted trees in winter.
Signature Spring Quality and Indications
The representative water type at Ebino Kogen Onsen is the "Sulfur Spring," known for its distinct aroma and milky-white appearance. The sulfur content is said to soften the skin's keratin, promote detoxification, and improve blood circulation, making it beneficial for various skin conditions and lifestyle-related diseases.
- Atopic dermatitis
- Chronic eczema
- Peripheral circulatory disturbance
- Impaired glucose tolerance (Diabetes)
- Hypercholesterolemia
Characteristics of the Water & Best Season
While the source temperature varies by facility, many offer gensen-kakenagashi baths, where the water flows directly from the source without added water or heating. The milky, sulfur-scented water is reputed to leave skin feeling smooth. Bathing while gazing at the grand nature in the cool highland climate helps you forget the stresses of daily life.
Autumn (late October to mid-November) is highly recommended, as you can enjoy both trekking and the beautiful fall colors. The blooming season of the Miyama Kirishima azaleas in spring (late May to early June) also offers a stunning landscape resembling a pink carpet.
