Overview
Itamuro Onsen is a quiet hot spring resort nestled at the foot of the Nasu mountain range in northern Tochigi Prefecture. Its history is ancient, said to have been discovered in 1059 by Nasu Saburo Muneshige during the Heian period. In the Edo period, it was counted as one of the Nasu Nana-yu (Seven Hot Springs of Nasu) and was cherished by many visitors for therapeutic bathing as "Shimotsuke no Yu."
Its most distinctive feature is the lukewarm water temperature, ranging from 38 to 41°C (100-106°F). This gentle temperature is easy on the body and ideal for "nagayu" (long bathing), which is said to enhance the body's natural healing abilities by warming it from the core. Due to its excellent therapeutic effects, it was designated a "National Health Resort Onsen" by the Ministry of the Environment in 1971, and the culture of toji (hot spring therapy) remains strong today.
Primary Spring Qualities & Indications
The main spring quality at Itamuro Onsen is a "Simple thermal spring," which is colorless, transparent, and non-irritating. It is so gentle on the skin and often used for rehabilitation that it's sometimes called "tsue-irazu no yu" (the spring that makes canes unnecessary). The soft, alkaline water is suitable for everyone to enjoy.

Water Characteristics & Best Season
The water at Itamuro Onsen is characterized by its relatively low source temperature of 38-45°C (100-113°F). Many facilities practice "gensen kakenagashi," where the spring water flows directly into the baths without being altered, allowing guests to fully experience its fresh, natural benefits. The lukewarm temperature encourages long, unhurried soaks, leading to deep physical and mental relaxation.
The area has a mild climate year-round, but the best times to visit are spring (April-June) for the beautiful fresh greenery, and autumn (October-November) when the foliage colors the valleys. Bathing while listening to the clear stream of the Naka River in the crisp air is an exceptional experience.
