Overview

The history of Kaike Onsen began in 1900 when a local fisherman discovered a thermal spring gushing from the seabed. Although a relatively new onsen, its name, which can be interpreted as "all live," is considered auspicious and has made it a beloved destination.

Modern hotels and ryokans line the coast of Yumigahama, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty, with many offering stunning ocean views. A major appeal is its year-round attractions: swimming in the summer and enjoying crab cuisine in the winter. It is also known as the birthplace of the triathlon in Japan.

Typical Spring Quality and Benefits

Chloride

The main spring quality is a Chloride Spring (Sodium/Calcium-Chloride Spring). Rich in salt similar to seawater, it creates a thin veil of salt on the skin after bathing. This prevents body heat from escaping, earning it the nickname "Netsu-no-yu" (hot water for warmth).

  • Poor circulation
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Cuts
  • Dry skin
  • Poor digestive function

Characteristics of the Water and Best Season

The source temperature is high, ranging from 63-83°C (145-181°F), and the water flow is abundant. The high salt content provides excellent heat-retention and moisturizing effects, leaving the skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Many facilities feature open-air baths with breathtaking views of the Sea of Japan.

While enjoyable year-round, summer allows visitors to enjoy both sea bathing and onsen. Winter (November to March) is the peak season for Matsuba snow crab, a local delicacy, attracting many tourists seeking to combine hot springs with gourmet dining.
