Why onsen bathing improves peripheral circulation
Peripheral circulation disorder occurs when capillary blood flow to the hands and feet is reduced. The thermal effect of onsen bathing dilates peripheral blood vessels through the skin, improving blood flow. This effect is common to all spring types and is included in the general indications recognised by Japan's Ministry of the Environment.
Particularly effective spring types
- Sulfur springs (H₂S type): Specifically indicated for peripheral circulation; absorbed H₂S promotes vascular dilation
- Carbon dioxide springs: CO₂ absorbed through skin dilates capillaries; bubbles envelop the skin during bathing
- Chloride springs: Salt film maintains warmth after bathing, preventing post-bath chill
