Overview

Hoshi Onsen is a single-inn hot spring resort located deep in the mountains near the border of Gunma and Niigata Prefectures. Its heart, the Chojukan inn, was founded in 1875. Several of its buildings, including the main hall and the grand Hoshi-no-yu bathhouse, are designated as National Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Situated along the historic Mikuni Kaido highway, it once served as a resting place for weary travelers.

The most remarkable feature of this onsen is its "ashimoto yushutsu" spring, where the water naturally bubbles up from between the stones lining the bottom of the bathtub. This allows bathers to soak in the freshest possible water, which hasn't been exposed to the air, maximizing its natural benefits. It has been a beloved retreat for many writers and artists, including the famed poet Akiko Yosano.

Primary Spring Quality and Indications

Sulfate

The main spring type is a Calcium/Sodium-Sulfate Spring. The water is clear, colorless, and gentle on the skin, known for its calming effects. It is also said to be effective for hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and external injuries, earning it the nickname "Kizu-naoshi no yu" (spring for healing wounds).

Water Characteristics and Best Season

The source temperature is around 43°C (109°F), a comfortable warmth perfect for long, relaxing soaks. The water is completely natural, free-flowing directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi) without any added water, heating, or circulation. The Hoshi-no-yu grand bath, with its Meiji-era architecture and distinctive arched windows inspired by the Rokumeikan style, offers a truly special bathing experience.

The area's natural beauty can be enjoyed year-round. However, the autumn season (mid-October to early November) when the surrounding mountains are ablaze with color, and the winter (December to March) when the landscape is blanketed in snow, are exceptionally picturesque.
