Overview
Harazuru Onsen is one of the largest hot spring resorts in Fukuoka Prefecture. Its history is relatively modern, with major development beginning after World War II. Situated on the banks of the Chikugo River, the town features a mix of ryokans and hotels set against a peaceful rural landscape. The name "Harazuru" is said to originate from a legend about cranes (tsuru) descending into the fields (hara).
Its most distinctive feature is the presence of two different types of spring water: Simple Weak Alkaline and Sulfur springs. This combination has earned it the nickname "W Bihada-no-Yu" (Double Beauty Waters), believed to help exfoliate old skin cells and brighten the complexion. Thanks to its abundant water supply, many facilities offer free-flowing hot spring baths (gensen kakenagashi).
Primary Spring Qualities and Indications
Harazuru Onsen primarily features two spring qualities: "Simple Onsen (weakly alkaline)" and "Sulfur Onsen." The weakly alkaline water has a cleansing effect, much like soap, helping to remove old skin cells. The sulfur water is said to inhibit melanin production, which may help prevent blemishes. This combination is why it's called "Double Beauty Waters." The water is gentle on the skin and has a smooth feel.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is around 40-50°C (104-122°F), with a plentiful flow. Many inns feature free-flowing baths, allowing guests to enjoy fresh, high-quality spring water. The water is clear and colorless, with a faint scent characteristic of sulfur springs. It is known for its smooth, slightly thick texture that feels silky on the skin.
While enjoyable year-round, the best time to visit is from late May to early October when you can watch traditional cormorant fishing (ukai) on the Chikugo River from a houseboat. In autumn, the area is also popular for fruit picking, with persimmons and pears in season.
