Overview
The history of Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen is said to date back to the Heian period (794-1185). During the Edo period, it flourished as a post town on the Mikuni Kaido highway, which connected Edo (now Tokyo) and Echigo Province. Its fame as a hot spring area was cemented by Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata's novel "Snow Country." The famous opening line, "The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country," depicts this very region.
Today, a major hot spring resort has formed around JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station, with numerous inns and hotels. In winter, many ski resorts open, attracting skiers and snowboarders from both Japan and abroad. The town is also dotted with public baths (sotoyu), making it easy to enjoy onsen-hopping.
Signature Spring Qualities & Benefits
The hot springs in Echigo-Yuzawa are primarily "Simple Thermal" and "Chloride" springs. Most are mildly alkaline and gentle on the skin, making them suitable for everyone from children to the elderly. The clear, colorless, and soft water warms you to the core, gently soothing muscles tired from skiing or hiking.

Water Characteristics & Best Season
Yuzawa's onsen boast an abundant flow of water. While not all facilities feature free-flowing spring water (gensen kakenagashi), you can still enjoy high-quality baths. The water temperature varies by source but is often around 40°C (104°F), perfect for a long, relaxing soak.
The best season to visit is undoubtedly winter, with its beautiful snowy landscapes. An open-air bath (rotenburo) surrounded by a world of white—known as yukimi-buro—is an exceptional experience. However, the area is a year-round destination, offering the fresh green of spring, cool mountain air and the Fuji Rock Festival in summer, and vibrant autumn foliage.
