Overview
Kurokawa Onsen is located in Minamioguni Town, on the northern side of Mount Aso. Its history dates back to the Edo period as a therapeutic hot spring retreat. Since the 1980s, the local inns have collaborated to create the "Rotenburo Meguri" (open-air bath tour) and preserve the town's traditional atmosphere, developing it into the charming destination it is today.
The main attraction is the "Nyuto Tegata," a wooden onsen-hopping pass. With this pass, you can visit the open-air baths of three different inns besides the one you are staying at. Strolling through the town in a yukata (light cotton kimono) while listening to the sound of the river is a quintessential Kurokawa experience.
Typical Spring Qualities and Indications
A key feature of Kurokawa Onsen is the variety of spring qualities, as each inn has its own source. Sulfur springs (Iou-sen) are particularly common and are said to be beneficial for beautiful skin. You can also find Chloride (Enkabutsu-sen) and Sulfate (Ryusan-en-sen) springs, allowing you to experience different water types during your onsen tour.

Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
Most inns offer gensen kakenagashi baths, where the water flows directly from the source without circulation, ensuring fresh, high-quality water. Spring temperatures are high, ranging from 40°C to over 90°C at the source, but are adjusted to a comfortable bathing temperature. The characteristic aroma of sulfur springs enhances the onsen atmosphere.
The town is beautiful year-round with its changing seasonal scenery. Autumn, with its vibrant foliage, and winter, with its magical snowy landscapes and steam, are particularly special. The "Yuakari" winter illumination event is also a highlight.
