Overview
The history of Kyomachi Onsen began in 1913 when hot steam erupted from a rice paddy. After drilling, a hot spring was discovered, and it developed into Miyazaki Prefecture's oldest onsen village. Centered around JR Kitto Line's Kyomachi Onsen Station, the area is dotted with ryokans, hotels, and public bathhouses beloved by locals.
The onsen town is situated in a tranquil rural area at the foot of the Kirishima Mountains, exuding a calm and nostalgic atmosphere. Many facilities take advantage of the abundant hot water by offering gensen kakenagashi (100% pure, free-flowing spring water), allowing visitors to enjoy fresh, high-quality baths. There is also a free footbath in front of the station, perfect for soothing tired feet.
Primary Spring Quality and Indications
The main spring type at Kyomachi Onsen is a 'Simple thermal spring,' which is colorless, tasteless, and odorless. The mildly alkaline water is gentle on the skin, making it suitable for everyone, from babies to the elderly. It is also known as 'bihada-no-yu' (water for beautiful skin), leaving your skin feeling smooth after bathing.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperatures are relatively high, ranging from 45°C to nearly 100°C, but are adjusted to a comfortable temperature at each facility. A key feature is the abundant flow rate, which allows many ryokans and public baths to provide water directly from the source without circulation. This ensures a fresh and high-quality onsen experience.
While enjoyable year-round, spring, with the fresh green of the Kirishima Mountains, and autumn, with its vibrant foliage, are particularly recommended for sightseeing and walking. In winter, the onsen provides a special comfort, warming you to the core.
