Overview
With a history stretching back over a millennium, Naruko Onsen-go's origins are rooted in legend, which tells of a volcanic eruption of Mt. Toriyaga-mori in 837 that caused the hot springs to gush forth. It has long been known as a therapeutic spa area (toji-ba), and the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho is said to have stopped here during his journey for 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North'.
This onsen village is composed of five distinct districts: the central 'Naruko Onsen,' the traditional 'Higashi-Naruko Onsen,' the rustic 'Kawatabi Onsen,' the silky-water 'Nakayamadaira Onsen,' and the nature-rich 'Onikobe Onsen.' Each area has its own unique spring qualities and atmosphere, making it a prime destination for onsen hopping. It is also nationally famous as the home of 'Naruko Kokeshi,' traditional wooden dolls whose heads squeak when turned.
Iconic Spring Qualities and Their Benefits
The greatest appeal of Naruko Onsen-go is its diversity of spring qualities. It boasts 8 of the 10 official types of onsen water found in Japan, excluding only Iodide and Radioactive springs. The most famous is the Sulfur spring (Iou-sen), known for its distinct aroma and benefits for skin beauty and lifestyle-related diseases. Visitors can also choose from other types, such as Chloride springs (Enkabutsu-sen) for heat retention and Iron-rich springs (Gantetsu-sen) for anemia.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The area is blessed with an abundance of hot spring water, and many facilities offer 'gensen kakenagashi'—baths filled with free-flowing water straight from the source. The water colors vary widely, from milky white and green to black and clear, allowing for a multi-sensory onsen experience. Water temperatures also range from hot to lukewarm, catering to different preferences.
While beautiful in every season, the best time to visit is from late October to early November, when the autumn foliage at Naruko Gorge, a stunning V-shaped canyon, is at its peak. In winter, enjoying an outdoor bath while gazing at the snow-covered landscape (yukimi-buro) is an exceptional experience.
