Overview

Located in Osaki, Miyagi, Naruko Onsen-go is a collective of five distinct hot spring areas: Naruko, Higashi-Naruko, Kawatabi, Nakayamadaira, and Onikobe. Its history is ancient, with legends stating that the springs first emerged from volcanic activity in 837 AD. The area is also tied to tales of the famous samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

The biggest draw of this onsen village is its incredible diversity of water types. It is one of the few places in the world where 9 of Japan's 11 official spring qualities are concentrated in one area (lacking only radioactive and carbon dioxide springs). This variety allows visitors to enjoy a wide range of bathing experiences, whether for therapeutic purposes (toji), beauty, or simple refreshment.

Signature Spring Types & Benefits

While Naruko offers a wide array of spring types, the most representative are Sulfur, Hydrogen Carbonate, and Chloride springs. Sulfur springs, with their distinct aroma and milky appearance, may help stimulate the immune system. Hydrogen Carbonate springs are known as "waters for beautiful skin" (bijin-no-yu), expected to leave your skin feeling smooth and silky. Chloride springs, or "warming waters," are excellent for their restorative warmth, heating the body from within.

  • CutsSoaking in the mineral-rich waters may help with the healing process of minor cuts and abrasions. The various minerals in the springs, such as those found in sulfur springs, are thought to have properties that support skin regeneration and health, contributing to recovery.
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Dry skinThe mineral components in the onsen water can help moisturize the skin. Specifically, sulfur springs, known for their "beautiful skin" effects, may help soften the skin, while the minerals can also form a moisturizing veil on the skin's surface to combat dryness.
  • Atopic dermatitisSoaking in the onsen may provide relief for symptoms of atopic dermatitis. The mineral-rich water, particularly from sulfur springs, is thought to possess qualities that can help calm irritated and sensitive skin, potentially reducing itchiness and improving skin condition.
  • Chronic eczemaThe therapeutic properties of the hot springs, especially the sulfur springs known for their skin benefits, may help soothe inflammation associated with chronic eczema. The minerals are believed to have a calming effect on irritated skin, helping to manage symptoms.
  • Peripheral circulatory disorders
  • Hypertension (Chloride springs)
  • Impaired glucose tolerance (diabetes) (Sulfur springs)

Water Characteristics & Best Season

Naruko Onsen-go boasts an abundant supply of hot spring water, with many inns and public baths offering fresh, free-flowing water directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi). The water color varies from clear, white, black, to green, and can even change with the weather and time, earning it the name "seven-colored waters." While many springs are quite hot, temperatures are adjusted at each facility. Autumn is the perfect season to visit, as the famous Naruko Gorge is ablaze with fall colors. Winter also offers the special experience of a "yukimi-buro," an outdoor bath with views of the snowy landscape.
