Overview
Unazuki Onsen, which opened in 1923, is a premier hot spring destination in Toyama Prefecture. Its source water is piped from Kuronagi Onsen, located about 7 kilometers upstream along the Kurobe River. The pipeline, constructed along the steep cliffs of the gorge, is a testament to the challenging engineering of its time.
Situated at the entrance to the Kurobe Gorge, one of Japan's most famous V-shaped valleys, many ryokans and hotels line the gorge, offering breathtaking seasonal views from guest rooms and open-air baths. The Kurobe Gorge Railway's Torokko Train is a major attraction, and Unazuki Onsen thrives as its departure point.
Prominent Spring Quality and Indications
The water at Unazuki Onsen is a weak alkaline simple spring with a pH of over 8. It is colorless, odorless, and gentle on the skin, making it suitable for everyone from children to the elderly. It is known as "bihada-no-yu" (water for beautiful skin) for its expected effect of softening and removing old skin cells.
- Sensitivity to cold
- Poor circulation
- Dry skin
- Decreased gastrointestinal function
Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is extremely high, over 90°C (194°F), with an abundant flow. The water temperature is adjusted before being distributed to the various inns. The clear, transparent water is said to be among the most transparent in Japan.
Unazuki Onsen can be enjoyed year-round, but the autumn season (late October to mid-November) is particularly spectacular, offering exceptional views of the fall foliage from the Torokko Train. In winter, enjoying the snowy landscape from an outdoor bath is a magical experience.
