Overview
Located within Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kirishima Onsen-go is a hot spring village composed of nine distinct spa areas. Its history is ancient, known as the stage for the "Tenson Korin," the mythological descent of gods that marks Japan's founding. The hot springs are dotted across elevations of 600 to 850 meters, surrounded by lush nature.
The area is also famous as the destination for the first honeymoon in Japan, taken by the samurai Ryoma Sakamoto and his wife Oryo, making it a fascinating spot for history enthusiasts. A key feature is the ability to enjoy "yu-meguri" (hot spring hopping), as each area offers different water qualities and atmospheres, earning it the nickname "department store of hot springs."

Water Characteristics and Best Season
Many facilities offer "gensen kakenagashi" baths, with water flowing directly from the source. The sulfur springs are known for their unique scent and smooth feel on the skin. The sight of steam rising from the ground is a classic Kirishima scene.
The area is beautiful in all seasons, but autumn (late Oct to mid-Nov) for fall foliage and early summer (late May to early June) for the blooming Miyama Kirishima azaleas are particularly recommended. Winter offers the special experience of enjoying an onsen while surrounded by a snowy landscape.
