Overview

Minakami Onsen-go is the collective name for several hot spring areas scattered along the Tone River valley, including Minakami, Yubiso, and Tanigawa. Its history is long, with some springs reportedly discovered during the Sengoku period (1467-1615). The area's greatest appeal is the majestic nature of Mt. Tanigawa and the beautiful Tone River valley.

The area began to flourish as a resort after the JR Joetsu Line opened in 1931, improving access from the Tokyo metropolitan area. It became a favored retreat for writers and artists. Today, it is also a popular hub for outdoor activities like river rafting and skiing, allowing visitors to enjoy both relaxing hot springs and nature adventures.

Water Characteristics and Best Season

The hot spring water is characteristically soft and smooth on the skin. Many facilities offer gensen kakenagashi (baths fed directly from the source), ensuring fresh, high-quality water. Water temperatures vary by source but are generally a comfortable 40°C (104°F).

While enjoyable year-round, autumn (October-November) with its vibrant fall foliage on Mt. Tanigawa and winter (December-March) with its magical snowy landscapes are especially recommended. Summer is perfect for combining onsen with river activities like rafting.
