Overview
This historic onsen has been a place of rest and purification (Yugoriba) for pilgrims on the World Heritage Kumano Kodo trails since the Edo period. Its most distinctive feature is that hot spring water emerges when you dig into the gravel of the riverbed. The real pleasure lies in creating your own "My Rotenburo" (open-air bath) by mixing the hot spring water with river water to achieve the perfect temperature.
From December to February, the river is dammed to create the "Sennin-buro," a massive open-air bath that attracts numerous visitors. This rustic and natural bathing experience, offering a sense of unity with nature, is a rarity anywhere in the world. The surrounding area is also rich in attractions where history and nature harmonize, such as the Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine.
Primary Spring Quality and Indications
The main spring type is a Sodium – Bicarbonate/Chloride Spring. It combines the heat-retaining properties of a chloride spring, which helps prevent post-bath chills, with the qualities of a bicarbonate spring, known as "Bijin-no-yu" (water for beautiful skin) for its ability to soften and smooth the skin's surface.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is a very high 73°C (163°F), so it's necessary to channel cool river water into your dug-out bath to adjust it to a comfortable temperature. The water flows freely and abundantly from the gravel riverbed, ensuring a constant supply of fresh onsen water. While inns may add water or heat to their indoor baths, the riverbed offers a pure, free-flowing source experience.
Kawayu Onsen can be enjoyed year-round, but the most popular season is winter, when the famous "Sennin-buro" is open. Soaking in the expansive open-air bath in the crisp air is an exceptional experience. Summer offers a combination of river swimming and onsen, while autumn provides beautiful foliage, each season having its own unique charm.
