Overview
Okukinu Onsen-go is a hot spring area located in the uppermost reaches of the Kinugawa River within Nikko National Park. It consists of four scattered inns: Kaniyu, Haccho-no-yu, Nikkozawa Onsen, and Teshirosawa Onsen, each with its own private spring source. To preserve its natural environment, the area is closed to general traffic. It's known as "Kanto's last hidden spa" because it is only accessible from the Meotobuchi parking lot by a shuttle bus for guests or on foot.
Surrounded by untouched beech forests, the area's greatest appeal is its seasonal natural beauty. The rustic open-air baths (rotenburo) set along mountain streams are particularly captivating. The spring qualities also vary by inn, including sulfur and simple thermal springs, allowing visitors to enjoy onsen-hopping. It is the perfect destination for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and rejuvenate mind and body in tranquility.
Typical Spring Qualities and Indications
Okukinu Onsen-go is blessed with multiple spring sources, most famously its milky-white Sulfur springs (Iou-sen). With a distinctive aroma, sulfur springs are said to be beneficial for skin conditions and improving blood circulation. Visitors can also experience other types of water, such as gentle Simple thermal springs (Tanjun-onsen), which are suitable for everyone.
- Atopic dermatitis
- Psoriasis vulgaris
- Chronic eczema
- Peripheral circulatory disturbance
- Cuts
Water Characteristics and Best Season
The area boasts an abundant flow of hot spring water, with most baths being 'gensen kakenagashi' (free-flowing directly from the source). Water temperatures vary by spring but are generally regulated to be comfortable for bathing in the natural surroundings. The cloudy, white sulfur water enhances the authentic onsen atmosphere.
While enjoyable year-round—with fresh greenery in spring, cool air in summer, and magical snowscapes in winter—the most popular time to visit is autumn. The fall foliage season, when the mountains are ablaze with color, offers an exceptional experience, especially when enjoyed from an open-air bath.
