Overview
The discovery of Rendaiji Onsen dates back to the Nara period and is attributed to the high-ranking monk Gyoki. As one of the most historic hot spring areas on the Izu Peninsula, it has long been cherished as a place for therapeutic bathing. Its name originates from Rendai-ji, a Tendai sect Buddhist temple located in the area.
The onsen is particularly famous for an episode involving Yoshida Shoin, a prominent intellectual of the late Edo period, who hid here while planning to stow away on one of Commodore Perry's Black Ships. Some ryokans still preserve the room where he is said to have stayed, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts. Located away from the bustle of central Shimoda, it continues to be loved as a quiet retreat.
Key Spring Qualities and Health Benefits
The primary spring quality at Rendaiji Onsen is "Simple Thermal Spring," which is mild and suitable for everyone. It is colorless, odorless, and has a soft texture on the skin. Some sources also contain elements of "Sulfate Spring," which can help moisturize the skin. Its gentle properties make it ideal for therapeutic bathing.
- autonomic instability
- insomnia
- sensitivity to cold
- dry skin
- cuts
- peripheral circulatory disturbance
Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
The source temperature is relatively high at around 53°C (127°F), and the abundant flow allows many facilities to offer gensen kakenagashi (free-flowing hot spring water directly from the source). This fresh, mostly unadulterated water allows you to fully experience the natural benefits of the onsen. Its gentleness on the skin makes it suitable for long soaks.
While enjoyable year-round, the mild weather of spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) makes these seasons ideal for strolling around the onsen town and its surroundings. In summer, combining your onsen trip with a visit to the nearby beautiful beaches is a great option.
