Overview
The history of Kamisuwa Onsen is ancient, with its existence known as far back as the Muromachi period. Legend holds that it was a "kakushi-yu" (hidden hot spring) used by the warlord Takeda Shingen to heal his wounds during the Sengoku period. In the Edo period, it flourished as the castle town of the Suwa-Takashima Domain and a post town on the Koshu Kaido highway, where many travelers rested and soaked in its therapeutic waters.
Its most defining feature is the high concentration of over 50 spring sources within a 500-meter square area along the lake, resulting in an exceptionally abundant flow. This allows visitors to enjoy the onsen in various forms, from the private baths of ryokan and hotels to public footbaths (ashiyu) near the station and casual community bathhouses (kyodo-yokujo). Some facilities even feature "kojo-rotenburo" (open-air baths on the lake), offering an expansive and liberating bathing experience.
Primary Spring Qualities & Benefits
Most springs in Kamisuwa are "Simple thermal springs," which are clear, colorless, and gentle on the skin. Suitable for everyone from children to the elderly, they are expected to promote deep relaxation. Some are "Chloride springs," also known as "netsu-no-yu" (waters of heat), as their salt content coats the skin, providing a restorative warmth that lasts long after bathing and may help relieve pain.
- Autonomic instabilityThe gentle, low-stimulus nature of this simple hot spring can help calm the nervous system. Soaking in the warm water may promote deep relaxation, which is beneficial for balancing the body's autonomic functions and easing stress-related symptoms.
- InsomniaThe relaxing properties of the simple thermal water can help soothe both mind and body, making it easier to unwind from daily stress. A warm, gentle bath is known to improve sleep quality, and this onsen's properties may enhance that effect.
- Depressive states
- Sensitivity to coldSoaking in the hot spring warms the body to its core, which can be particularly beneficial for those who often feel cold. The sustained warmth from the bath helps improve the body's ability to retain heat, providing lasting relief from chronic chilliness.
- Cuts
- Peripheral circulatory disorders
- Dry skin
Water Characteristics & Best Season
The source temperatures are high, ranging from 50°C to 70°C, but the abundant flow allows most facilities to adjust the temperature by adding cool water. Some inns and public baths offer gensen-kakenagashi (water flowing directly from the source). The clear, mild water is ideal for long soaks. While Kamisuwa Onsen can be enjoyed year-round, summer is lively with the Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival, and in winter, the warmth of the onsen is especially comforting. In rare years, a mystical natural phenomenon called "Omiwatari," where the frozen lake surface cracks and forms a large ice ridge, can be observed.
