Overview
Kamisuwa Onsen is a hot spring town situated on the banks of Lake Suwa, Nagano's most prominent lake. Its history is long, with records of hot springs gushing forth as early as the Muromachi period (1336-1573). Legend has it that the famous warlord Takeda Shingen used these waters as a secret bath to heal his wounds, making it a fascinating spot for history enthusiasts.
The most notable feature of this onsen area is its incredibly abundant water volume, one of the highest in Japan. It produces about 15,000 kiloliters of hot spring water daily, which was once so plentiful that it was piped to many private homes. Even today, visitors can enjoy luxurious, free-flowing hot spring baths (kakenagashi) at numerous ryokans and day-use facilities.
Main Spring Quality and Indications
The primary spring quality at Kamisuwa Onsen is "Simple thermal spring" (Tanjun-onsen). The water is colorless, clear, and gentle on the skin, making it suitable for everyone, from children to the elderly. It is known for its relaxing effects, perfect for soothing the fatigue of daily life.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is high, ranging from 50 to 70°C (122-158°F), but it is adjusted to a comfortable temperature at each facility. Thanks to the abundant flow, many inns feature kakenagashi baths, allowing guests to soak in fresh, constantly replenished water. Open-air baths and footbaths with views of Lake Suwa are also popular.
Kamisuwa Onsen offers unique charms in every season. Summer features a massive fireworks festival over the lake, autumn brings vibrant foliage, and winter offers a chance to see the mystical "Omiwatari" (God's Crossing), a natural phenomenon where the lake ice cracks and ridges. In spring, the cherry blossoms at Takashima Castle are a beautiful sight.
