Overview

Located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, Yufuin Onsen is a hot spring resort spread out at the base of the beautiful Mt. Yufu, also known as "Bungo Fuji." Once a quiet therapeutic spa, it purposefully avoided large-scale commercial development to cultivate a tranquil and sophisticated atmosphere. Today, it has become a popular destination attracting numerous visitors year-round.

The appeal of Yufuin extends beyond its hot springs. The main street, "Yunotsubo Kaido," is lined with stylish cafes, restaurants, unique souvenir shops, and art museums, making it a delightful place for a stroll. Additionally, the magical morning mist over Kinrin Lake, where hot spring water and fresh water well up from the bottom, is an iconic Yufuin sight.

Primary Spring Quality and Indications

Simple

Most of the hot springs in Yufuin are classified as "Simple Onsen," which are colorless, transparent, and gentle on the skin. This type of water is suitable for everyone, from children to the elderly, and is said to be effective for rheumatic diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, as well as recovery from fatigue and stress relief.

  • Autonomic instability
  • Insomnia
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Peripheral circulatory disorder
  • Cuts
  • Dry skin

Water Characteristics and Best Season

Yufuin Onsen boasts the second-largest number of hot spring sources and the third-largest volume of spring water in Japan. As a result, many ryokans and facilities offer fresh, free-flowing hot spring water (gensen kakenagashi) directly from the source. The water is mild and has a smooth, silky feel on the skin.

While Yufuin is beautiful in every season, autumn is particularly recommended for the vibrant foliage on Mt. Yufu. The chilly mornings from autumn to winter are perfect for witnessing the fantastic mist over Kinrin Lake. The area is also a pleasant retreat from the summer heat and lovely in spring with fresh greenery.
