Overview
Despite being located in Saga City, the prefectural capital, Furuyu Onsen is a tranquil hot spring resort situated in a quiet mountain valley along the Kase River. Its history is exceptionally long, with a legend stating it was discovered by Jofuku, an envoy of Emperor Qin Shi Huang of China, during his quest for the elixir of immortality. The name "Furuyu," meaning "old hot spring," reflects this ancient heritage.
Its most distinctive feature is the "nuruyu," or lukewarm water, which is close to human body temperature at around 38°C. This temperature is gentle on the heart and is said to have a high relaxation effect, allowing for extended, leisurely bathing. For this reason, it has long been known as a place for hot spring therapy (toji) and was cherished by many writers and artists. It is particularly famous as the place where the poet Mokichi Saito stayed for recuperation, composing numerous poems.
Primary Spring Quality and Indications
The spring quality at Furuyu Onsen is Alkaline Simple Hot Spring. This gentle water is mild on the skin and is also known as "Bijin-no-yu" (water for beautiful skin) because it leaves the skin feeling smooth. It is colorless, transparent, and mostly odorless, making it suitable for everyone.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperatures are relatively low, ranging from 34.5°C to 43.6°C, so many facilities heat the water, but the comfort of the lukewarm bath remains. Some ryokans (traditional inns) offer baths with free-flowing spring water directly from the source. The gentle water can be enjoyed year-round, but spring, with its fresh green foliage, and autumn, with its vibrant colors, are particularly recommended for enjoying the onsen along with the surrounding natural scenery.
