Overview
The discovery of Ryujin Onsen dates back about 1,300 years to the 7th century. It is said that En no Gyoja, the founder of the Shugendo religion, discovered the spring after receiving a divine message in a dream and enshrined the dragon god (Ryujin), from which the onsen gets its name. Surrounded by mountains and overlooking the beautiful Hidaka River valley, this area has long been a popular destination for therapeutic bathing (toji).
During the Edo period, the onsen flourished under the patronage of the Kishu Tokugawa clan, who established exclusive lodges, 'Kami Goten' and 'Shimo Goten,' for the feudal lords' recuperation. Due to its history and the quality of its water, it is celebrated as one of Japan's 'Three Great Beauty Hot Springs,' along with Yunokawa Onsen in Shimane and Kawanaka Onsen in Gunma. Its waters are particularly popular among those seeking skin-enhancing benefits.
Main Spring Type and Indications
Ryujin Onsen's primary component is sodium bicarbonate. This spring type has an emulsifying effect that softens the skin's surface and helps remove old keratin and impurities from pores. This cleansing action is why it's called a 'Beauty Hot Spring,' leaving your skin feeling exceptionally smooth after bathing.
- CutsThe bicarbonate ions in the water have a cleansing effect, which may help keep minor cuts and abrasions clean. This gentle action supports the skin's natural healing process.
- Dry skinThe water's bicarbonate ions gently soften and wash away old, dry skin cells. At the same time, the sodium ions help to replenish and lock in moisture, leaving the skin feeling deeply hydrated and smooth.
- Chronic eczema
- Poor circulationBathing in the naturally hot spring water can help improve blood flow and warm the body from its core. The water's minerals may also help the body retain heat after the bath, easing the discomfort of poor circulation.
Water Characteristics and Best Season
The water at Ryujin Onsen is colorless, transparent, and has a thick, almost viscous feel that clings to the skin. Many facilities offer 'gensen kakenagashi' (water flowing directly from the source), allowing you to enjoy the abundant and fresh spring water. The water temperature is typically a pleasant 38-42°C (100-108°F), ideal for long, relaxing soaks to fully experience the spring's benefits.
While beautiful in all four seasons, the best times to visit Ryujin Onsen are in spring (April-May) when the mountains are lush with new growth, and in autumn (late October-November) for the vibrant fall foliage. An open-air bath with a view of the valley is an exceptional experience for both body and soul.
