Overview
Ryujin Onsen is renowned as one of Japan's "Three Great Beautifying Hot Springs" (Nihon Sanbijin-no-yu), alongside Yunokawa Onsen in Shimane and Kawanaka Onsen in Gunma. Its history dates back approximately 1,300 years, when it was said to be discovered by En no Gyōja, the founder of the Shugendo religion. Later, the monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) was said to have visited after a dragon god (Ryujin) appeared in his dream, giving the onsen its name.
During the Edo period, it flourished as a private retreat for the lords of the Kishu-Tokugawa clan. Today, the onsen town, with its traditional inns lining the clear Hidaka River, offers a tranquil atmosphere amidst the beauty of the surrounding valley, which changes with the seasons. It's a secluded paradise for rejuvenating both mind and body.
Prominent Spring Quality and Indications
The water at Ryujin Onsen is a sodium bicarbonate saline spring. It is colorless, clear, and has a characteristic silky, almost viscous feel on the skin. The bicarbonate ions in the water help to gently exfoliate by emulsifying old skin cells, while sodium ions moisturize, leaving the skin feeling incredibly smooth after bathing. This remarkable effect is why it's celebrated as a "beautifying spring."

Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is a pleasant 48°C, allowing many facilities to offer baths with free-flowing spring water (gensen kakenagashi) without any added water or heating. The abundant flow ensures a constant supply of fresh water, which is one of its key attractions. The water is gentle on the skin, making it suitable for long, relaxing soaks.
Located in a deep valley, the onsen town showcases the vibrant changes of the seasons. The autumn foliage season (late October to mid-November) is particularly breathtaking. However, enjoying the baths while viewing winter snow, fresh spring greenery, or listening to the murmur of the river in summer makes it a wonderful destination year-round.
