Overview
Yumura Onsen's history dates back to 848, when it was said to be discovered by the Buddhist monk Jikaku Daishi. At the heart of the town, along the Haruki River, the main source "Arayu" still gushes out 470 liters of 98°C water per minute, its steam creating a classic onsen atmosphere.
This abundance of high-temperature water has long been intertwined with daily life. The sight of locals and tourists boiling eggs and vegetables at Arayu is a signature scene of Yumura Onsen. The town also gained nationwide fame as the setting for the 1981 NHK television drama "Yumechiyo Nikki," and it continues to attract fans today.
Prominent Spring Qualities and Indications
The water at Yumura Onsen is a Sodium - Bicarbonate/Chloride/Sulfate Spring. This mildly alkaline water is soft on the skin. The bicarbonate component is known for its skin-beautifying effects, as it helps to emulsify and smooth the skin's surface. Additionally, the chloride content coats the skin, helping to retain body heat after bathing.

Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
Its most defining feature is the extremely high source temperature of 98°C. Thanks to the abundant flow, many ryokans and public baths offer "gensen kakenagashi"—baths filled with free-flowing, pure spring water. The water is clear, colorless, and mostly odorless, making it gentle and suitable for everyone.
Yumura Onsen can be enjoyed year-round. Winter is especially popular, as it is the season for Matsuba snow crab, a delicacy from the Sea of Japan, attracting many visitors seeking both fine dining and hot springs. The townscape blanketed in snow is also very charming. Summer offers riverside fun amidst lush greenery, while autumn provides beautiful foliage.
