Overview
Yumura Onsen's history dates back to 848, when it was said to have been discovered by the Buddhist monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin. The 'Arayu' source, gushing out on the banks of the Haruki River, billows steam at a scorching 98°C, a true symbol of the onsen town. This abundant thermal energy is also used to provide hot water and heating for homes and inns, making it known as an environmentally friendly, sustainable onsen destination.
Yumura Onsen gained nationwide fame as the setting for the 1981 television drama 'Yumechiyo Nikki.' The series, which depicted the life of protagonist Yumechiyo (played by actress Sayuri Yoshinaga) in the onsen town, drew countless visitors. The 'Yumechiyo-kan' museum still stands, preserving the atmosphere of the drama. At Arayu, a 'yugaki' culture of boiling eggs and vegetables in the hot spring water is practiced by locals and tourists alike, offering a unique, hands-on way to experience the blessings of the onsen.
Key Spring Qualities and Health Benefits
The waters of Yumura Onsen are primarily classified as a 'Sodium - Bicarbonate, Chloride, Sulfate Spring.' Bicarbonate springs are known as 'bijin-no-yu' (waters of beauty) for their ability to soften and smooth the skin. Chloride springs create a thin veil of salt on the skin, which helps retain body heat. The addition of sulfate properties provides a composite of therapeutic effects.
- CutsThe mineral components in the water are believed to have a mild cleansing quality, which may aid the natural healing process of minor cuts and scrapes. Improved blood flow from the warm water can also support tissue repair.
- Sensitivity to coldThe spring's chloride content creates a fine layer on the skin that prevents body heat from escaping quickly after your bath. This warming effect helps combat a chronic feeling of coldness by promoting sustained, improved circulation.
- Dry skinThe bicarbonate ions in the water help to gently soften and remove old keratin from the skin's surface, promoting a smoother texture. The water's salts also form a moisturizing veil, which may provide relief from dryness.
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Reduced gastrointestinal function
- Poor peripheral circulation
Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
With a source temperature of 98°C, the water is cooled to a comfortable temperature at each facility, either by adding cool water or using heat exchangers. Thanks to the abundant flow, many ryokans and public baths offer the luxury of 'gensen kakenagashi' (free-flowing spring water). The water is clear, colorless, and soft on the skin.
While Yumura Onsen can be enjoyed year-round, the winter season is particularly recommended. The atmosphere of soaking in an onsen amid a snowy landscape is exceptional, and it's also the season for 'Matsuba-gani' (snow crab), the king of winter delicacies from the Sea of Japan. Spring and autumn offer mild weather, perfect for strolling through the onsen town and enjoying the surrounding nature.
