Overview

Lake Shikaribetsu Onsen is a hot spring resort located on the shores of Lake Shikaribetsu at an altitude of about 810 meters in the southeastern part of Daisetsuzan National Park. As the highest lake in Hokkaido, its isolated environment has earned it the nickname "the lake in the sky." Its greatest appeal is the pristine nature, surrounded by primeval forests and home to rare creatures like the Miyabe char and the northern pika.

Its history as an onsen resort is relatively new, with development beginning in the 1950s. As a result, there are no large entertainment districts, maintaining a calm atmosphere where visitors can quietly connect with nature. The "Shikaribetsu Kotan," a village of ice and snow that appears in winter (late January to mid-March), is a unique event, offering fantastical experiences like an open-air bath on the ice and an ice bar.

Typical Spring Qualities and Health Benefits

The main spring types are Chloride and Bicarbonate springs. These waters are often called "Bijin-no-yu" (waters of beauty) for their skin-smoothing and moisturizing effects. The color of the water varies by source, from clear to brownish. At inns with multiple springs, you can enjoy comparing the different waters.

Water Characteristics and Best Season

Many facilities use "gensen kakenagashi," where hot spring water flows directly from the source into the baths, allowing you to fully experience the natural properties of the onsen. Each season offers a different charm: summer is for activities like canoeing and trekking, autumn for the stunning foliage around the lake, and winter for the aforementioned "Shikaribetsu Kotan." No matter when you visit, you can spend special time feeling at one with the magnificent nature.
