Overview

Dake Onsen is a hot spring resort located on a plateau at an altitude of about 450 meters on the southern foot of Mt. Iwaki (1,625m) in Hirosaki City, Aomori. Its history dates back to 1684 when it was discovered by a hunter in the mountains. Since then, it has flourished as a 'toji' (therapeutic bathing) site under the patronage of the Tsugaru clan.

The onsen town is compact, with a few ryokans, hotels, and day-use bathing facilities. Its most distinctive feature is the milky white water drawn directly from the source. The air is filled with the scent of sulfur, enhancing the authentic onsen atmosphere. Surrounded by a primeval beech forest, the quiet environment provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Typical Spring Quality and Indications

Sulfur

The representative spring quality of Dake Onsen is a Sulfur Spring. There are four source springs, all of which are acidic and rich in sulfur components. The water turns milky white upon contact with air and is said to be highly effective for skin conditions. The unique aroma is proof of its high concentration of hot spring minerals.

Water Characteristics and Best Season

Many facilities offer 'gensen kakenagashi' baths, where the water flows directly from the source, allowing you to enjoy the freshest onsen water. The source temperature is slightly high at around 45-50°C (113-122°F), but it is adjusted to a comfortable temperature in the tubs. The water has a slightly tingling sensation and leaves your skin feeling refreshed. Be sure to remove any metal accessories before bathing, as they may tarnish.

Dake Onsen is charming in every season. You can enjoy fresh green foliage in spring, cool air and mountain climbing in summer, stunning autumn colors on Mt. Iwaki, and snowy landscapes in winter. The autumn foliage season from mid to late October is particularly recommended for enjoying both the hot springs and the spectacular views.
