Overview
Nagayu Onsen is a hot spring village nestled at the foot of the Kuju Mountains in western Oita Prefecture. Its history is long, with records of the local feudal lord visiting for therapeutic bathing during the Edo period. Its most defining feature is the high concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide, which envelops bathers in silvery bubbles, earning it the nickname 'Ramune no Yu' or 'Soda Pop Spring'.
With a lukewarm temperature of around 30-40°C (86-104°F), the waters allow for long, relaxing soaks without straining the heart. This characteristic has led to the adoption of German-style 'Kur' spa therapy, which combines bathing with drinking the mineral-rich water (insen) to promote health. You can find several public drinking fountains throughout the town to try it for yourself.
Primary Spring Quality and Indications
The primary spring type at Nagayu Onsen is a Carbon Dioxide Spring. The CO2 absorbed through the skin is believed to dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. This is said to be beneficial for alleviating high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis, as well as reducing strain on the heart.
- Peripheral circulatory disturbance
- Sensitivity to cold
- Cuts
- Poor digestive function
Water Characteristics and Best Season
The water is lukewarm and characterized by fine bubbles that cling to the skin. Many facilities offer free-flowing spring water (gensen kakenagashi), allowing you to experience the full power of the fresh carbonated spring. Despite the lower temperature, improved blood circulation leaves you feeling warm to the core after your bath.
Nagayu can be enjoyed year-round. The lukewarm water is particularly pleasant and refreshing during the hot summer months. In winter, its excellent heat-retaining properties prevent you from feeling chilled after bathing. Soaking while admiring the seasonal beauty of the Kuju Highlands is an exceptional experience.
