Overview
Senami Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Murakami City, at the northernmost tip of Niigata Prefecture. Its history is relatively new, beginning in 1904 (Meiji 37) when hot water erupted from the ground during an oil drilling operation. With a source temperature of 95°C, it is nicknamed "Atsu-no-yu" (the hot water) and is beloved by many onsen enthusiasts.
Its greatest appeal is its prime location facing the Sea of Japan. Many ryokans and hotels offer open-air baths and guest rooms with ocean views, and the beauty of the sun setting over the horizon is truly exceptional. Soaking in the onsen while watching the sunset provides a moment of pure bliss for visitors. The area is bustling with tourists year-round, with beach activities in the summer and snowy landscapes and delicious seafood in the winter.
Typical Spring Quality and Indications
The main spring quality at Senami Onsen is a Sodium-Chloride spring. Rich in salt, the minerals adhere to the skin after bathing, preventing sweat from evaporating and thus retaining body heat for a long time. True to its name "Atsu-no-yu," it warms the body from the inside out and prevents post-bath chills, making it highly recommended for those who suffer from sensitivity to cold.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
As the source temperature is extremely high at around 95°C, many facilities add cool water or use heat exchangers to bring it to a suitable bathing temperature. The springs are abundant, and many inns offer baths with water flowing directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi). The water has a slightly salty taste and is rich in metasilicic acid, giving it a gentle feel on the skin.
The best time to see the beautiful sunsets is from autumn to winter when the air is clear. In summer, you can enjoy both swimming at the beach and soaking in the onsen. Winter is also the perfect season to indulge in food and hot springs, as Murakami's famous salmon and other seafood from the Sea of Japan are in season.
