Overview

The history of Senami Onsen began dramatically in 1904 (Meiji 37) when 1,000 tons of hot water erupted from the sea during an oil drilling operation. Since this discovery, it has flourished as a hot spring area boasting abundant, high-temperature water.

Its location on the Sea of Japan is one of its greatest assets. Many ryokans and hotels are built along the coast, offering spectacular sunset views from guest rooms and open-air baths. This beautiful scenery combined with the healing properties of the onsen provides visitors with a sense of deep relaxation.

Primary Spring Quality and Benefits

The main spring type is a Sodium-Chloride Spring. Rich in salt, the water forms a thin veil on the skin after bathing. This layer prevents sweat from evaporating, helping the body retain heat. It's nicknamed "Netsu-no-yu" (waters of heat) for its long-lasting warming effect.

  • cutsThe high salt content of this sodium-chloride spring is said to have a mild disinfecting effect. This property may help in the natural healing process of minor cuts and scrapes.
  • peripheral circulatory disordersThe spring's powerful heat-retention effect warms the body deeply, which can help improve blood flow. This sustained warmth may alleviate symptoms associated with poor circulation in the hands and feet.
  • sensitivity to coldThe water is particularly suited for those who feel cold easily, as its salt content creates a veil on the skin. This effect prevents post-bath chills and helps the body retain warmth for a longer period.
  • depressive states
  • dry skinThe salt minerals form a thin coating on the skin that helps lock in moisture after bathing. The water is also rich in metasilicic acid, a component known to be gentle and hydrating for the skin.

Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit

With a source temperature of 95°C, the water is extremely hot. While most facilities add cool water to adjust the temperature, many still offer gensen-kakenagashi (free-flowing) baths. The abundant, slightly salty water gently warms the body to the core.

The best time to visit is from summer to autumn, when the sunsets are most spectacular. It's also a great time to combine swimming in the sea with onsen bathing. Winter offers a different kind of beauty, with views of the rough Sea of Japan and snowy landscapes.
