Overview
The history of Shionoe Onsen is ancient. It is said to have been discovered by the Buddhist priest Gyoki in the Nara period, and later, during the early Heian period, Kobo Daishi (Kukai) visited and spread knowledge of its therapeutic effects. Due to its profound history, it is the only hot spring in Kagawa Prefecture designated as a "National Hot Spring Health Resort."
In the Edo period, it flourished as a private spa for the Matsudaira clan, the lords of the Takamatsu domain. Its quiet, mountain-ringed setting is perfect for refreshing oneself away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and it retains a strong atmosphere of a traditional therapeutic spa town loved by many.
Representative Spring Quality and Indications
The main spring type at Shionoe Onsen is a "Radioactive spring" containing radon. The water is clear, colorless, and odorless, with low irritation, making it suitable for everyone. It is said to warm the body from the core and is expected to enhance the immune system and natural healing powers.
- Hyperuricemia (gout)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Peripheral circulatory disturbance
- Sensitivity to cold
Water Characteristics and Best Season
As the source temperature is relatively low, most facilities heat the water. However, the spring is characterized by its abundant flow and soft, pleasant feel on the skin. It is also well-suited for long-term stays for therapeutic purposes (toji).
The ability to enjoy the scenery of all four seasons is another of Shionoe Onsen's charms. You can appreciate different atmospheres throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in early summer, river activities in summer, autumn foliage, and snowy landscapes in winter. Spring, with its fresh greenery, and autumn, when the mountains are ablaze with color, are particularly recommended.
