Overview
Sakunami Onsen, located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, has long been cherished as "Sendai's Okuzashiki" (back parlor or private retreat). Its history dates back to 721 AD in the Nara period, when it was said to have been discovered by the high priest Gyoki. During the Edo period, it flourished as a therapeutic spa, used as a private onsen by the ruling Date clan of the Sendai Domain.
Inns are scattered along the clear stream of the Hirose River, captivating visitors with the beauty of the valley through the seasons. The scenery is particularly stunning in spring with fresh greenery and in autumn with vibrant foliage. The area is also known as the birthplace of the traditional "Sakunami Kokeshi" dolls.

The onsen boasts an abundant flow of water, and many inns offer baths with free-flowing spring water (gensen kakenagashi).
