Overview

Fukuji Onsen is one of the hot spring areas located in the Okuhida Onsen Village of Gifu Prefecture. Legend has it that fugitive warriors of the Heike clan healed their wounds here, and it has long been cherished as a therapeutic spa. The 'Legend of Zenshiro,' about a villager who discovered the spring through a divine message, is also passed down through generations.

The most defining characteristic of this onsen is its nostalgic atmosphere, reminiscent of Japan's traditional landscapes. Many ryokans (inns) feature irori (sunken hearths) and welcome guests in buildings relocated or renovated from old folk houses. It is the perfect destination for those wishing to spend a relaxing time in the serenity of a mountain hamlet.

Typical Spring Qualities and Indications

Simple
Chloride
Bicarbonate

In Fukuji Onsen, many inns have their own unique hot spring sources, primarily offering 'Simple Onsen,' 'Bicarbonate Springs,' and 'Chloride Springs.' Simple Onsen is gentle and suitable for everyone. Bicarbonate Springs are known as 'bijin-no-yu' (waters of beauty) for their skin-smoothing properties. Chloride Springs are expected to warm the body from its core.

Water Characteristics and Best Season

The volume of hot water is exceptionally abundant, and many inns offer baths fed directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi). The water temperature varies by source but is generally around 40°C to 60°C, with many facilities allowing guests to enjoy the water at its natural temperature without adding cold water or reheating. The water is typically clear, colorless, and soft to the touch.

The area's natural scenery is beautiful in all four seasons, but the best times to visit are autumn (around October) when the mountains are ablaze with fall colors, and winter (December to February) when you can soak in the onsen while admiring the snowy landscape. An open-air bath in the snow (yukimi-buro) is an exceptional experience.
