Overview
The history of Beppu Onsen is ancient, with mentions in the 8th-century text "Fudoki of Bungo Province." During the Kamakura period, it became known as a therapeutic retreat where samurai would come to heal their wounds. In the Meiji era, with the development of the port and railway, it evolved into a modern hot spring resort attracting many tourists.
Its most defining feature is the steam rising from vents all over the city and its overwhelming volume of water. With over 2,200 hot spring sources and a daily output of about 83,000 kiloliters, it ranks number one in Japan in both categories. This rich geothermal resource is divided into eight unique onsen areas called the "Beppu Hatto," each with different mineral compositions and ambiances, making it ideal for onsen-hopping.
Key Mineral Springs and Their Benefits
The Beppu area is remarkable for featuring 7 of the 10 main types of mineral springs found in the world, including simple, chloride, bicarbonate, and sulfur springs. This diversity allows visitors to choose an onsen based on their wellness goals. You can also experience unique bathing methods, such as the steam baths of Kannawa Onsen or the mud baths of Myoban Onsen.

Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
Thanks to its abundant flow, many facilities in Beppu offer gensen kakenagashi—baths filled with constantly flowing, fresh-from-the-source spring water. The source temperatures are often very high and are adjusted to a comfortable level at each facility. The water's appearance is another attraction, ranging from clear to various colors like blue, white, and red.
Beppu can be enjoyed year-round, but winter is especially magical as the entire town is enveloped in steam, creating a fantastic landscape. This scenery, known as "Beppu's Yukemuri," is designated as a National Important Cultural Landscape. Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather, perfect for combining onsen bathing with sightseeing and strolls.
