What is Fluoride ion?

Fluoride ion (F⁻) is best known as the cavity-preventing mineral, but in hot springs it is also said to have a gentle antibacterial action on the skin. Drinking quantity limits apply.

Main Effects

Strengthens tooth enamel (when drinking)When consumed, fluoride ions can combine with the hydroxyapatite in your teeth to form fluoroapatite. This process strengthens the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid and helping to prevent cavities. Always adhere to the daily permissible limits for drinking.
Mild antibacterial action on skinFluoride ions are contained in some spring waters and are sometimes said to have a mild antibacterial action on the skin. However, this is not among the official indications for bathing.
Abundant in alkaline springsFluoride ions are often detected in hot springs originating from igneous rock. As a result, they are frequently found in alkaline springs and are considered a contributing factor to the alkalinity of many simple hot springs (単純温泉).
