Overview
Nagato Yumoto Onsen was reportedly discovered around 600 years ago during the Muromachi period. The story tells of a priest from Tainei-ji Temple who saw a white fox healing its wounds in the hot spring. It is a historic onsen with records of the feudal lords of the Choshu domain visiting for therapeutic bathing during the Edo period.
In recent years, the entire onsen town has been renovated based on the concept of creating a pleasant outdoor walking experience. Centered around the Otozure River, the area now features riverside terraces, cafes, and a public bathhouse called 'Onto,' creating a modern space enjoyable for strolling in yukata. At night, the riverside is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.
Prominent Spring Quality and Indications
The water is a clear, colorless, and gentle alkaline simple hot spring. With a high pH level, it is known as 'Bijin-no-yu' (water for beautiful skin) as it is believed to help remove old keratin and promote skin metabolism, leaving the skin feeling smooth after bathing.
- poor circulation
- cuts
- dry skin
- autonomic instability
Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is a relatively lukewarm 39°C (102°F), so the water is heated in many facilities. However, some inns and public baths offer tubs with free-flowing water directly from the source. The gentle water is perfect for long, relaxing soaks.
As the town is ideal for strolling, the best seasons to visit are spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (fall foliage) when the weather is pleasant. In winter, an event called 'Otozuregawa Uta Akari' features bamboo lanterns, offering a fantastic nighttime view.
