Overview
Sounkyo Onsen is a hot spring resort located in central Hokkaido, within Daisetsuzan National Park, Japan's largest national park. Hotels and inns line the spectacular Ishikari River gorge, which features columnar jointed cliffs stretching for about 24 kilometers.
Its history dates back to 1900, when it was originally called "Shioya Onsen." In 1921, writer Keigetsu Omachi visited and, praising the beauty of the gorge, named it "Sounkyo." Since then, it has developed as a base for Daisetsuzan tourism and a place to enjoy therapeutic bathing in rich nature.
Signature Spring Qualities and Benefits
The spring quality at Sounkyo Onsen is mainly "Simple thermal springs," which are gentle on the skin, and "Sulfur springs (hydrogen sulfide type)," known for their distinct aroma. The water is clear and soft, making it suitable for everyone. Sulfur springs are known to potentially improve blood circulation and skin condition.
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Atopic dermatitisThe sulfur springs found in the area are known for their potential to soothe skin inflammation and irritation. Regular bathing may help manage the symptoms of chronic skin conditions by providing gentle, therapeutic effects.
- Psoriasis vulgaris
- Impaired glucose tolerance (Diabetes)Certain mineral components, especially in the sulfur springs, are traditionally thought to support metabolic health. Bathing is believed to improve circulation and may have a beneficial effect on the body's overall metabolic processes.
- Sensitivity to coldThe high temperature of the source water provides a deep, lasting warmth. This thermal effect can boost circulation and help the body retain heat, potentially alleviating the chronic coldness often felt in the limbs.
- Dry skin
Water Characteristics and Best Season
The source temperature is high, over 60°C (140°F), and the abundant flow allows many facilities to offer gensen kakenagashi (free-flowing) baths. The water is clear, but the sulfur springs have a faint sulfur scent that enhances the onsen atmosphere.
Sounkyo's greatest appeal is its seasonal scenery. It's worth visiting year-round: summer with its fresh greenery, autumn (late September to early October) when the mountains are ablaze with Japan's earliest fall colors, and winter for the "Ice Waterfall Festival," where the gorge is lit up with ice sculptures.
