Overview
Sounkyo Onsen is located in Daisetsuzan National Park, the largest in Japan, in central Hokkaido. The area's iconic landscape is defined by a 24-km gorge along the Ishikari River, featuring sheer cliffs of columnar joints. Its name originates from the Ainu term "Souunbetsu," meaning "river with many waterfalls."
Development as a modern hot spring resort began in the early 1900s, growing alongside improvements in transportation. Today, it is one of Hokkaido's leading onsen resorts, with a range of accommodations from large hotels to traditional ryokan. It is also a popular base for outdoor activities, attracting numerous tourists year-round.
Signature Spring Qualities & Health Benefits
The main types of spring water in Sounkyo are Simple Onsen, which is gentle on the skin, and Sulfur Onsen, which is said to be effective for lifestyle-related diseases and skin conditions. Different facilities may have different water qualities, allowing visitors to enjoy a variety of bathing experiences.

Water Characteristics & Best Time to Visit
The source temperatures are high, over 60°C (140°F), and the water volume is plentiful. A key attraction is that many facilities offer gensen kakenagashi (free-flowing water directly from the source). The water is colorless and transparent, with a distinct aroma if it's a sulfur spring. Each season offers a unique charm: fresh greenery and alpine flowers in summer, Japan's earliest autumn colors, and the Icefall Festival with snowy landscapes in winter. The fall foliage from late September to early October is particularly breathtaking.
