Overview
The discovery of Akiu Onsen is said to date back to the Kofun period (c. 300-538 AD). Legend holds that it cured the skin ailment of the 29th Emperor Kinmei, earning it the title "Natori no Miyu" (Imperial Bath of Natori). It has long been recognized as one of Japan's "Three Great Hot Springs," alongside Arima Onsen in Hyogo and Dogo Onsen in Ehime.
During the Edo period, it became the designated bathing spot for the ruling Date clan of the Sendai Domain. Its connection with the feudal lords earned it the nickname "Sendai's Inner Parlor," a beloved retreat that continues to attract visitors today.
Typical Spring Quality and Indications
The primary spring types in Akiu are Chloride, Simple Thermal, and Sulfate springs. The waters are clear, colorless, and gentle on the skin. Chloride springs are known as "warming waters" because they heat the body from the core and help retain warmth after bathing.

Water Characteristics and Best Season
Source temperatures range from 32°C to 56°C, with most facilities heating the water. The area is blessed with an abundant flow, and some inns offer baths with free-flowing spring water directly from the source. The gorge is beautiful in every season, but spring with its fresh greenery and autumn with its vibrant foliage are particularly recommended. The snowy landscapes of winter also offer a magical experience.
