Overview
Shirahama Onsen, alongside Arima Onsen (Hyogo) and Dogo Onsen (Ehime), is one of the "Three Ancient Hot Springs of Japan," with a history of over 1,300 years. The Nihon Shoki, an ancient chronicle of Japan, records visits by many emperors, including Empress Saimei and Emperor Tenji, when it was known as "Muro-no-yu."
The onsen town developed along Shirarahama Beach, which lives up to its name with its pure white sand. A key characteristic of the area is its unique blend of a lively seaside resort atmosphere and a deep-rooted onsen culture. The town is blessed with numerous spring sources, allowing visitors to enjoy different water qualities at various facilities. Hopping between historic public baths like Saki-no-yu and Muro-no-yu is also a popular activity.
Key Spring Qualities & Benefits
While Shirahama Onsen has diverse spring sources, they are predominantly "Chloride springs" and "Bicarbonate springs." Chloride springs are called "netsu-no-yu" (warming waters) as their salt content coats the skin and prevents body heat from escaping. Bicarbonate springs are known as "bihada-no-yu" (waters for beautiful skin) for their expected effect of softening and smoothing the skin by removing old keratin.

Water Characteristics & Best Season
The source temperatures range widely from 32°C to 85°C, and the volume of water is plentiful. Many ryokans, hotels, and public baths offer baths fed directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi). There are also many open-air baths near the sea, where bathing to the sound of the waves is an exceptional experience.
Thanks to its mild climate, Shirahama can be enjoyed year-round. Summer is bustling with beachgoers, while winter is perfect for warming up in the onsen and savoring the seasonal delicacy, Kue (longtooth grouper) cuisine. The pleasant weather in spring and autumn makes them ideal seasons for strolling and sightseeing.
