2 Spring Types Indicated for Chronic Skin Conditions
Japan's Ministry of the Environment lists two spring types with bathing indications for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis:
- Sulfur springs: Soften the stratum corneum and offer antiseptic/anti-inflammatory action. Hydrogen sulfide and sulfur-ion types act differently on the skin.
- Acidic springs: Strong bactericidal action; effective for chronic skin conditions. Strongly acidic springs (pH ≤ 3, e.g. Kusatsu Onsen) have especially high antiseptic potency.
Bathing precautions for sensitive skin
- Avoid bathing during acute flare-ups or when skin is broken or oozing
- Start with short soaks (5–10 min) or partial immersion to gauge skin response
- Rinse with lukewarm fresh water after bathing to remove spring residue
- Apply moisturiser immediately after drying to support the skin barrier
- Stop bathing if itching or irritation increases
