Overview
Tsukioka Onsen was discovered by chance in 1915 during an oil drilling operation. Initially, its strong petroleum-like smell was a deterrent, but its remarkable therapeutic effects gradually became known, leading to its development as a spa resort. Today, it is nationally recognized as a "spring of beauty" and "spring of eternal youth."
The most distinctive feature of Tsukioka Onsen is its stunning emerald-green water, which changes color over time. This color is due to the concentration of hydrogen sulfide ions, a testament to its high sulfur content. The charming onsen town is perfect for a stroll, with footbaths, drinking fountains, and local gourmet spots to enjoy.
Key Spring Qualities and Health Benefits
The primary spring quality is a weakly alkaline sulfur spring that also contains sodium chloride. It boasts one of the highest sulfur concentrations in Japan and is affectionately called "bijin-no-yu" because it leaves the skin feeling exceptionally smooth. The chloride content also helps to coat the skin, preventing body heat from escaping and keeping you warm long after your bath.

Water Characteristics and Best Season to Visit
The source temperature is a hot 51°C (124°F), and many establishments offer baths with 100% pure, free-flowing spring water (gensen kakenagashi) without any added water or heating. The water is abundant, and its unique sulfur aroma enhances the authentic onsen experience. While enjoyable year-round, the winter season offers magical "yukimi-buro" (snow-viewing baths), and the period from spring to early summer, with its fresh green foliage, is also particularly scenic.
