Overview

The history of Tsukioka Onsen began in 1915 (Taisho era) when hot spring water unexpectedly gushed out during oil drilling. Although a relatively new onsen, its exceptional water quality quickly established it as one of Niigata's most famous hot spring resorts.

Its most striking feature is the beautiful emerald green water. This color is due to one of the highest sulfur concentrations in Japan and subtly changes hue with the weather and light. Known as "Bijin-no-yu" (Waters for Beauties) and "Furochoju-no-yu" (Waters for Longevity), its therapeutic properties and beauty continue to attract many visitors.

Key Spring Type & Indications

The water at Tsukioka Onsen is a sulfur-containing sodium chloride spring, with an exceptionally high sulfur content. It is mildly alkaline and gentle on the skin. It is called "waters of beauty" because it is believed to help remove old skin cells and promote skin renewal.

  • Atopic dermatitisThe spring's high sulfur content is believed to have a gentle, soothing effect on inflamed skin. Regular bathing may help to calm irritation and soften the skin, which can be beneficial for managing chronic, non-acute phases of this condition.
  • Psoriasis vulgaris
  • Chronic eczemaThe combination of sulfur's anti-inflammatory properties and the overall cleansing effect of the onsen may help manage symptoms. The warmth and minerals can soothe persistent skin irritation, contributing to better skin health over time.
  • Impaired glucose tolerance (diabetes)
  • High cholesterol
  • CutsThe high sulfur content in the water is known for its mild disinfectant properties, which may aid in the clean healing of minor abrasions and cuts. Improved circulation from the warm bath can also support the body's natural recovery process.

Water Characteristics & Best Season

The source temperature is high at around 51°C (124°F), so it is cooled to a comfortable temperature before being piped into the baths. The distinct sulfur aroma enhances the onsen experience. Many ryokans offer baths with free-flowing water directly from the source. While enjoyable year-round, autumn with its colorful foliage and winter with its serene, snowy landscapes are particularly popular. Spring offers cherry blossoms, and summer features lush green countryside.
