Overview
Located in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, Matsunoyama Onsen is a renowned hot spring, ranked alongside Kusatsu and Arima as one of Japan's "Three Great Medicinal Onsen." Its history dates back about 700 years, with a legend of a hawk healing its wounds in the spring, giving it the nickname "Taka-no-yu" (Hawk's Spring). The onsen town stretches along a quiet mountain valley, preserving the atmosphere of a traditional tōji (hot spring cure) resort.
The most remarkable feature of Matsunoyama Onsen is its geological origin. The water is a rare "geopressure-type" spring, where seawater trapped underground about 12 million years ago erupts to the surface due to geothermal heat and immense pressure. This "fossil seawater" is highly concentrated, and its medicinal properties have been cherished by bathers seeking therapeutic relief for centuries.
Spring Type & Benefits
The main type is a Sodium/Calcium-Chloride spring. With over 15,000 mg of dissolved minerals per kg of water, it is one of the most concentrated onsen in Japan. The high salt content coats the skin, preventing perspiration from evaporating and providing excellent heat retention, which keeps you warm long after your bath. It is also known for its sterilizing effects. The unique, oil-like aroma is a sign of its rich mineral content.
- CutsThe high salt content of the water is said to have a sterilizing effect. This property may help in cleansing and promoting the natural healing of minor cuts and scrapes.
- Peripheral circulatory disturbance
- Sensitivity to coldAs a "heat spring," the water is exceptionally good at warming the body to its core. The salt minerals form a veil on the skin that prevents heat loss, providing long-lasting relief for those who often feel cold.
- Dry skinThe high concentration of salt in the water forms a thin film over the skin. This "veil" of minerals helps to lock in the skin's natural moisture, preventing it from evaporating and thus alleviating dryness.
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Water Characteristics & Best Season
The source temperature is extremely high, over 90°C (194°F), so most facilities add cool water to achieve a comfortable bathing temperature. However, thanks to the abundant flow, most inns offer gensen kakenagashi (free-flowing water directly from the source). Visiting during the snowy winter allows you to fully appreciate the spring's restorative warmth. The fresh green of the beech forests in spring and the vibrant foliage in autumn also make for beautiful and recommended seasons to visit.
