What is Radon?

Radon (Rn) is a natural radioactive gas. Hot springs with trace amounts are classified as "radioactive springs," known for their hormesis effect benefiting gout and rheumatoid arthritis.

Main Effects

  • Indicated for gout and rheumatoid arthritisThe low-dose radiation emitted by radon is believed to help ease the chronic inflammation associated with these conditions. It may work by suppressing the activity of inflammatory cytokines, which are key factors in joint pain and swelling.
  • Hormesis effect (cellular stimulation)This refers to the body's beneficial response to low-dose radiation. Exposure to trace radon stimulates cellular defenses, activating antioxidant enzymes (like SOD) and inducing the body's own anti-inflammatory signals.
  • No body accumulation — 3.8-day half-lifeRadon is a volatile gas with a short half-life of 3.8 days. Due to these properties, it is quickly expelled from the body and does not accumulate, allowing for safe and repeated bathing to experience its therapeutic effects.

Radioactive Springs: Traditional Radon Waters for Gout & Joint Conditions

Radioactive springs contain radon (Rn) at 30×10⁻¹⁰ Ci/kg (8.25 Mache units) or more. Indicated for hyperuricemia (gout), rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. The trace radioactivity levels are comparable to natural background radiation in daily life, and the short radon half-life (3.8 days) means it does not accumulate in the body.

Metasilicic Acid: The "Beauty Spring" Standard Mineral & Top 5 Onsen

Metasilicic acid (H₂SiO₃) is a natural moisturizer also found in skincare lotions. Hot springs containing more than 50mg/kg are called "beauty springs" — leaving skin hydrated long after bathing. This is one of the therapeutic spring criteria in Japan's Mineral Spring Analysis Guideline (Table 1-1).
