This is one of the most well-known sources in Noboribetsu, a leading onsen destination in Hokkaido. It continuously flows at a high temperature of 96.5°C, embodying the raw power of the earth. Sounkyo, the gorge of the Ishikari River, is one of Hokkaido's great mountain spa areas, fed by hot water from the volcanic Daisetsuzan range. A local trucking company drilled a well to wash its trucks and struck hot water instead, opening a day-bathing facility in 1999. The No. 1 well flows naturally at 420 L/min. Faintly yellow at the source, it looks like oolong tea in the tub, is almost tasteless with a hint of iron and oily scent, and its mildly alkaline, bicarbonate-based water feels smooth and slippery, recalling the peat-derived moor springs of southern Hokkaido.

Meto Onsen was discovered in the Meiji era and opened in 1904 as a secluded inn deep in the Tokachi mountains. The 58°C source flows naturally beside the Nukanan River and is cooled by a heat exchanger, never with added water, before reaching the tubs. Its pH 9.5 alkalinity and carbonate give a distinctly slick, silky feel. Clear with a faint hydrogen-sulfide scent, it suits those who want to soak at leisure surrounded by primeval forest and the sound of the stream.

Noboribetsu Onsen, Hokkaido's renowned hot spring, often called a 'department store of hot springs,' began its formal history in the Edo period when Takimoto Kinzo established a therapeutic bath. Despite the rugged landscape of 'Jigokudani' (Hell Valley), an explosive crater site said to be home to demons, the waters, a bounty from this earth, are filled with powerful healing.
