Ishida Onsen
Analysis UnverifiedIshida Onsen's source flows naturally on the flanks of Mt. Esan, an active volcano, and is piped about 2.5 km down, inheriting the spring once used by a highland hotel. The 1984 analysis shows pH 2.1 and 5.518 g/kg of dissolved solids, with 2,972 mg/kg of sulfate plus abundant aluminum and iron, in the lineage of classic alum and green-vitriol springs. Clear at the source, the water oxidizes to a cloudy yellow-brown in the bath, with a squeaky feel, sour taste and metallic scent that speak of the volcano.
The bar length shows how abundant each component is compared to thresholds that make it "distinctive" (therapeutic spring standards, beauty spring criteria, etc.).
Strong astringent action that tightens skin. A key component of acidic springs, suited to oily or acne-prone skin.
An iron-rich spring whose water turns yellow-brown to red-brown when exposed to air. Strong heat retention.
Undissociated boric acid with antibacterial action that keeps the skin surface clean.
A natural moisturizer also used in skincare lotions. Forms a thin veil on the skin to reduce moisture loss after bathing.
Oxidized iron. Tints the water reddish-brown, lending a visually dramatic, "powerful" bath feel.
Scores are calculated from mineral analysis data based on the Mineral Spring Analysis Guidelines (Ministry of Environment, Japan). They are unrelated to facility atmosphere or service quality.
▸Note
The temperature, pH and component values shown here are based on the hot spring analysis (source). Actual values in the bath may differ depending on heating, dilution, recycling and filtration. Please check current usage status at the facility.
At pH 2.1 the water is strongly acidic, so start with short soaks and keep it away from eyes and cuts. Rinse lightly with fresh water and moisturize afterward, and remove jewelry, as the iron can stain metal and towels.
Its strong pH 2.1 acidity and 2,972 mg/kg of sulfate tighten the skin and are traditionally associated with immune system stimulation, while iron- and aluminum-rich waters have long had a place in balneotherapy for cleansing the skin.
At pH 2.1 the water can irritate sensitive or dry skin; keep it from eyes and cuts, avoid long soaks, rinse with fresh water, and consult a doctor during acute illness.
