Biratori Onsen Source
Analysis UnverifiedBiratori has bathed in cold mineral water since 1979, first trucking in water that seeped naturally across the river. In 2011 a 1,503 m borehole was sunk at Nibutani on the Saru River, a place that still carries Ainu culture, and tapped a new cold spring. At 12.1°C and a mildly alkaline pH 8.3, it holds 22.06 g/kg of minerals, led by 6,303 mg of sodium, 2,016 mg of calcium and 13,400 mg of chloride, close to seawater in strength. Clear, colorless and intensely salty, it feels like ancient sea water sleeping deep beneath Hokkaido.
The bar length shows how abundant each component is compared to thresholds that make it "distinctive" (therapeutic spring standards, beauty spring criteria, etc.).
Salinity comparable to seawater. The salt film traps heat for outstanding warmth ("hot bath spring").
Above 10 mg classifies the spring as an "iodine spring" — a rare type that delivers antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action through the skin.
Undissociated boric acid with antibacterial action that keeps the skin surface clean.
Absorbed through the skin to gently calm nervous tension, leaving deep relaxation after the bath.
Salt forms a thin film on the skin, retaining heat after bathing. Helps with poor circulation.
Scores are calculated from mineral analysis data based on the Mineral Spring Analysis Guidelines (Ministry of Environment, Japan). They are unrelated to facility atmosphere or service quality.
▸Note
The temperature, pH and component values shown here are based on the hot spring analysis (source). Actual values in the bath may differ depending on heating, dilution, recycling and filtration. Please check current usage status at the facility.
The 12.1°C source is heated for bathing. Its very high salt content can tire you quickly, so take several short soaks, rinse lightly with fresh water afterward to prevent dryness, and watch your step on the slippery floor.
With 13,400 mg/kg of chloride, this hypertonic water is traditionally associated with restorative warmth: a salt film on the skin slows heat loss, keeping you warm long after bathing, and it may support relief of pain from stiffness and chill.
With over 22 g/kg of dissolved minerals, long soaks can cause dizziness or bath fatigue. Those with sensitive skin should rinse afterward, and people with acute illness, serious heart disease or kidney failure should avoid bathing.
