In atrophic gastritis, parietal cells decrease, leading to insufficient gastric acid. The chloride ions (Cl⁻) abundant in chloride springs stimulate parietal cells to produce hydrochloric acid, helping to restore digestive capacity. This is the opposite mechanism to acid reflux (where excess acid is the problem).
