Kyowa Onsen (Chojuyu and Kyowayu Mixed Spring)
Analysis UnverifiedKyowa Onsen opened in 1969 in Aibetsu, a town known for mushrooms. Its two sources, Chojuyu and Kyowayu, rise from the same spot and carry more than 1,800 mg/kg of free carbon dioxide, a rarity in Hokkaido. Because boiling would drive off the gas and alter the minerals, the inn pours the source straight from the tap into a small tub and adds hot water to reach bathing temperature, letting it flow without recirculation. The iron-tinged, yellowish water leaves fine bubbles on the skin for a smooth feel.
The bar length shows how abundant each component is compared to thresholds that make it "distinctive" (therapeutic spring standards, beauty spring criteria, etc.).
Bubbles cling to the skin and dilate blood vessels — the "heart spring." Warms the body even at lukewarm temperatures.
A natural moisturizer also used in skincare lotions. Forms a thin veil on the skin to reduce moisture loss after bathing.
A trace component with gentle antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.
Scores are calculated from mineral analysis data based on the Mineral Spring Analysis Guidelines (Ministry of Environment, Japan). They are unrelated to facility atmosphere or service quality.
▸Note
The temperature, pH and component values shown here are based on the hot spring analysis (source). Actual values in the bath may differ depending on heating, dilution, recycling and filtration. Please check current usage status at the facility.
The small source tub is warmed by adding hot water; move between it and the plain-water tub as needed and take time to enjoy the bubbles on your skin.
With 1,819 mg/kg of free carbon dioxide, the water is traditionally said to boost circulation for restorative warmth, while 433.6 mg/kg of bicarbonate is associated with silky skin.
Carbon dioxide can build up in the bathroom, so keep it ventilated and avoid long soaks; the iron content may stain white towels.
