Tochiomata No. 1
Analysis UnverifiedTochiomata Onsen, in the mountains of Uonuma, is the oldest healing retreat of the Yunotani hot spring area; said to have been found some 1,200 years ago, it is known for the saying "bathe for a week and you won't catch a cold for a year." Tochiomata No. 1 rises naturally from granite ground at around 35°C and flows, unheated and undiluted, into the three shared "sacred spring" baths, Shita-no-Yu, Ue-no-Yu and Oku-no-Yu. Shita-no-Yu sits directly above the source, and the old custom of soaking quietly for one to two hours lives on.
The bar length shows how abundant each component is compared to thresholds that make it "distinctive" (therapeutic spring standards, beauty spring criteria, etc.).
A rare radioactive spring where trace radiation absorbed via inhalation and skin is expected to stimulate cells (the "hormesis effect").
Scores are calculated from mineral analysis data based on the Mineral Spring Analysis Guidelines (Ministry of Environment, Japan). They are unrelated to facility atmosphere or service quality.
▸Note
The temperature, pH and component values shown here are based on the hot spring analysis (source). Actual values in the bath may differ depending on heating, dilution, recycling and filtration. Please check current usage status at the facility.
The water is close to body temperature, so the traditional way is to soak slowly for one to two hours. Radon from radioactive springs is also taken in by breathing, so relax and breathe quietly near the surface, and warm up in the heated rinse tub before getting out.
With 684.5 Bq/kg of radon, this radioactive spring has long been traditionally associated with helping relieve pain, and its smooth pH 8.6 alkaline water, close to body temperature, invites long soaks that may support immune system stimulation and deep calm.
Even lukewarm water takes energy during very long soaks, so rest and drink water along the way, and skip bathing if you feel unwell or bath-fatigued.
