Choon R2 Source
Analysis UnverifiedOshamambe Onsen began when hot water gushed out during exploratory drilling for natural gas, and a town-run public bathhouse opened here in 1955. The Choon R2 source, a well bored 621 meters deep in 1991, is shared by the Oshamambe hot spring cooperative among the inns of the spa district. Its briny, sea-like water wraps the skin and lets warmth linger long after bathing, ideal for rail travelers easing into a cold southern Hokkaido night.
The bar length shows how abundant each component is compared to thresholds that make it "distinctive" (therapeutic spring standards, beauty spring criteria, etc.).
Undissociated boric acid with antibacterial action that keeps the skin surface clean.
Salinity comparable to seawater. The salt film traps heat for outstanding warmth ("hot bath spring").
Salt forms a thin film on the skin, retaining heat after bathing. Helps with poor circulation.
A natural moisturizer also used in skincare lotions. Forms a thin veil on the skin to reduce moisture loss after bathing.
Scores are calculated from mineral analysis data based on the Mineral Spring Analysis Guidelines (Ministry of Environment, Japan). They are unrelated to facility atmosphere or service quality.
▸Note
The temperature, pH and component values shown here are based on the hot spring analysis (source). Actual values in the bath may differ depending on heating, dilution, recycling and filtration. Please check current usage status at the facility.
At 49.6°C at the source, some tubs feel very hot. Pour water over yourself first, take several short dips in the hotter tub, and drink water afterward, as the salty spring draws moisture from the body.
With 5,600 mg/kg of chloride, this hypertonic water leaves a fine salt veil on the skin that is traditionally associated with restorative warmth. Its 49.6°C heat may support efforts to relieve pain in stiff shoulders and lower backs, suited to cold winter days or the end of a long journey.
Because the water is hot and highly saline, long soaks can cause dizziness or bathing fatigue. People with high blood pressure or heart concerns should keep baths short.
